Dear Friends,
chana luba

Birth is one of the most powerful experiences a person can have. Being present for the awesome experience is a privilege and an honor. In order to be a good facilitator of this intense event one must constantly be learning the "art of labor support" and the beauty of being "with woman". Each of us has our own way and the path is ever unfolding... may we be privilege to learn the way of mothering the mother. Blessings, Chana Luba Ertel

With Woman
birth
A doula will help a women face herself, her challenges, her fears; she will not always fix them. A doula will be there; she will listen, she will encourage, she will breathe, she will center herself, she will sense, she will touch, she will give and love... A doula must be courageous in this area and be brave enough to follow her instincts.

The women trained by me are taught the subtle lessons of "being with women." These include becoming a birth detective, which means using many different skills and knowledge bases to gain information about what is going on with a woman in labor and what needs to be done or offered by the doula. Another component of this intimate training is learning to be a facilitator. This is a unique role that is fostered over time and experience. Some tools that BirthRite students gain in this area are the use of Birth Art, Guided Imagery/Hypnosis, Creating Affirmations, Good Listening Skills and the art of Trusting in Birth.

Cultivating Tools...
One of the most useful tools that I have found to be useful at birth is Humility. You can never master it and there are always ample opportunities to learn it!

Look for ways to put your "self" aside at a birth and redirect the energy to the mother. Remember that it is a gift for you to be there and honor that gift by knowing that you are to be a guiding hand...not a directing hand...

Learning tools...
A wonderful book that is short and to the point is Special Women: The Role of Professional Labor Support by Polly Perez. This book is written by a women who has lots of experience in labor support and has a true love for doula work. It is full of insight and practical advice.

You can by this book and other books at the BirthRite Store. All profits made through BirthRite's affiliate store will be made into contributions to local charities.

I hope you are all enjoying the summer weather. Please note that my address and phone number have changed!

In peace,

raising eyes
